BEFORE CALLING FOR REPAIRS
Check these first
- Air filter dirty? A clogged air filter causes problems and shuts off the cooling system. Remove and replace the air filter.
- Power supply on? Check for a tripped electrical breaker switch.
- Furnace “kill switch.” Do you see a “light” switch mounted on the outside of the furnace cabinet? Make sure it is in the ON position.
- Thermostat working? Is it set to "On" and "Cool." If it uses batteries, replace them. A faulty thermostat is a common cause of no air.
- Outside AC condenser. Poor air flow due to grass, landscaping, or dirt can shut the AC off. Clean the area and wash the unit if dirty. If frosted or frozen, turn the thermostat AC to OFF and the Fan ON to let it thaw for many hours. Call PDM if it is frozen, as this could indicate a problem with refrigerant levels.

Refrigerant Leaks - the lifeblood that allows an air conditioner to function. Drainage - a dirty or clogged condensate pump, drain pan, or drain pipe can cause water damage and result in no AC. Dirty air filter can reduce air flow by 65% and lead to coil freezes and the system seizing up entirely. Restricting a system’s required airflow can be a costly fix. Check your air filter every few months. Electrical. Air movement voltage absorption system. The start capacitor sends a pulse of energy to start the motor. The run capacitor creates a continuous flow of pulses to keep the motor running. If one corrodes enough due to neglect and dirt, the cooling stops. Compressor - Weakened compressor can mean warmer air or less air flow. AC runs without cooling your place. Fan problem. Condenser fan motor purpose is to transfer heat from the refrigerant system into outdoor air, which keeps the compressor from over-heating. Blower fan motor in the furnace moves air inside your home or business. Both fans need to be fully functional to cool. Frozen evaporator coil due to poor air flow from malfunctioning blower fan, dirty air filters, or even damaged or blocked vent/ductwork. Dirty coils will not absorb the heat from the air, causing the condensation to become too cold and freeze. If frozen turn off ac, turn on fan to help thaw out. A refrigerant problem can also cause a frozen coil. Thermostat controls the entire HVAC system. Thermostat problems can make it seem like your entire air conditioner is non-functional.

AC repair service FAQ
How much do HVAC service calls cost?
The cost for an HVAC service call will vary depending on many factors, but most AC and furnace repairs cost $144 to $451 on average, with minimum service visit charges ranging from $75 to $200. If you're not sure what's wrong with your air conditioner, an AC diagnostic is roughly $89, while a tune-up investment is around $100.
Why is my central air running but not cooling the house?
A blocked or clogged condenser coil might be the cause of your air conditioner working but not cooling the house. Dirt, grass and other flying debris can clog the condenser coil by accumulating between the fins. A filthy coil can increase energy costs, warmer air at the registers or, in the worst-case scenario, a full system shutdown or compressor failure. Clearing dirt, carefully vacuuming the coil with a brush attachment or gently washing the coil with a hose are all options for cleaning the coil. If your system is still not cooling, it's time to call a professional.
What would cause my home AC system to not kick on?
Your air conditioner may not turn on due to a variety of thermostat issues. Disconnected or missing cables are one of the most typical issues. Your air conditioner will not turn on if the wires are torn, disconnected or dirty. A broken thermostat is another prevalent issue. The thermostat will not deliver the signal to the air conditioner to turn on if it fails. If your thermostat is causing you difficulties with your air conditioning, you should replace it as soon as possible.
