What is the world’s largest sculpture?

Hint: It was sculpted in South Dakota granite from 1927-1941.

Mount Rushmore

The first 130 years of America helped create Mount Rushmore, the President’s Mountain. It is more than 60 feet tall, took 14 years to complete and cost one million dollars. Sculpted by gutsy Gutzon Borglum (1867-1941) with help from his son Lincoln and second wife Mary Montgomery Williams Borglum and 400 workers. No one died during the difficult construction.

President Washington represented the struggle for independence. Jefferson for the idea of government by the people. Roosevelt for world affairs. And Lincoln for equality and a permanent union.

Each head is 60 feet long. Roosevelt’s mustache is 20′ long. Presidents noses are 20 feet long, mouths are 18 feet wide and eyes are 11 feet wide.

Some Americans were insulted by changing the face of the mountain which originally was part of the Lakota Sioux Nation and known as Six Grandfathers. Lakota chief Black Elk used the area as a spiritual journey. The US military gained control of the land by battle from 1876 to 1878.
