Don’t feel frustrated and embarrassed from your water.
That rotten-egg smell comes from hydrogen sulfide, a chemical produced by sulfur bacteria that occur naturally in water or by a reaction inside a water heater that contains a magnesium anticorrosion rod.
While hydrogen sulfide presents no danger to human health, it’s certainly unpleasant, and it can tarnish copper and silverware or stain laundry or porcelain.
The bacteria may be controlled in one of several ways: by treating the water with chlorine, raising the water heater’s temperature, replacing the water heater’s magnesium anodyne rod with an aluminum rod, or installing filters.
