Before and after Prohibition (1920-1933) Aunt Toots was asked by Grandpa Joe to fill up the beer pail at the neighborhood bar. Toots would carry a small pail with a tight fitting lid to the bar and they would fill it up the growler with fresh beer, as much as a half-gallon.
Some believe these covered pails were called “growlers” because the lid made a rumbling sound as the carbon dioxide escaped from under the lid.
