Patient FAQs: What ails the water at your home or office?

Why is my tap water cloudy, and what can I do about it?

  • Sometimes called “white water,” cloudy water is caused when tiny air bubbles come out of solution in the water.
  • Cold water holds more air than warm water, these little bubbles will appear when water with a high dissolved oxygen content is warmed or depressurized (for example, when it pours out of your tap).
  • This condition is harmless and will disappear as the oxygen is released from the water, but you can hurry the process along by running your drinking water through a reverse osmosis filter. Crystal-clear water will fill your sparkling glasses—and you’ll have no more plastic bottle clutter.

My water tastes like iron, and sometimes it comes out of the tap the color of rust. What’s that about?

  • A metallic taste in water is generally caused by dissolved metals, such as iron, copper, or sometimes manganese.
  • Iron in your water is not a health hazard, but neither is it very aesthetic.
  • A tiny amount of dissolved iron can turn the water an alarming reddish-brown color, give tea and coffee a disagreeable flavor, and give your fresh veggies a strange dark color.
  • Rusty-looking water may indicate that the pipes are corroding and can eventually leak.
  • PDM Rust Doctors have filters that work well in our area.

My sink is getting blue-green stains. What causes that?

  • Blue or rusty stains and pinhole pipe leaks are signs of acidic water.
  • The stains come from the action of the acid on copper pipes.
  • Water may pick up copper from the corroding pipes. Although the amount of copper that is likely to leach into tap water is not harmful to healthy young adults, it may be harmful to infants, small children, and frail elders.
  • We can slow or stop acids from creating more pipe damage using acid neutralizer filtering, although it should be borne in mind that this treatment can’t undo existing corrosion.

Can anything be done about the nasty rotten-egg smell that comes out of our tap water?

  • That rotten-egg smell comes from hydrogen sulfide, a chemical produced by sulfur bacteria that occur naturally in water or by a reaction inside a water heater that contains a magnesium anticorrosion rod.
  • While hydrogen sulfide presents no danger to human health, it’s certainly unpleasant, and it can tarnish copper and silverware or stain laundry or porcelain.
  • The bacteria may be controlled in one of several ways: by treating the water with chlorine, raising the water heater’s temperature, replacing the water heater’s magnesium anodyne rod with an aluminum rod, or installing filters.

What about a musty, fishy taste or smell?

  • Algae, molds and bacteria can live in your water and can multiply within your plumbing system.
  • Sometimes these issues can be resolved by flushing the home’s pipes.

Is bottled water safer or better than tap water?

  • Bottled water has a dirty secret: it may actually be tap water, and there are no regulations requiring bottlers to tell you where the water comes from or how they treat it.
  • According to the Consumer Reports site Consumerist, “Bottled water makers are not required to disclose even as much information as your local municipality,” and in some instances bottled water has been proven to contain more contaminants than ordinary tap water.
  • So, tap water starts out as safe and maybe safer than the stuff you buy in plastic bottles.
  • You can improve flavor and purity of less than optimal tap water by installing a good filter system.
  • As the President’s Cancer panel stated in a report titled Reducing Environmental Cancer Risks: What We Can Do Now, “Filtering home tap water or well water can decrease exposure to numerous known or suspected carcinogens or endocrine disrupting chemicals.”

Chlorine: the good and bad

  • Municipalities do their best to provide drinkable water to you.
  • They use chemicals, among them chlorine, to treat the water and kill most disease-causing bacteria and viruses.
  • These chemicals are necessary to get the water to your home faucet, free of many contaminants that would make you sick.

However, scientists have known for years that chlorine carries risks, too. For example, increased rates of bladder cancer, birth defects, and brain cancer have been associated with consumption of chlorinated tap water.

  • While you can evaporate out most chlorine and chlorination byproducts simply by letting a pitcher of water sit for a couple of days, when you bathe or shower with tap water, you will be exposed to chloroform, a hazardous byproduct of chlorination that can be absorbed through the skin, by breathing, or by ingesting shower water.
  • A ten-minute shower may expose you to as much chlorine and chlorine products as drinking eight glasses of tap water.
